Ah, there are so many possibilities. IBM has a new sea water battery. Vanadium will replace lithium "any day now". Even Tesla has new patent applications for batteries. Which horse to bet on??
My bet is on John B. Goodenough's solid state battery... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_B._Goodenough https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glass_battery
Hopefully, something will come from that. A battery that can last 3000+ cycles will likely outlast every other major part on a vehicle.
Thing of it is, batteries have to be cheap to make, safe, scale well, and easily manufacturable. It says a lot that the lead-acid battery is still in use after 160 years.
