The other reason BMW doesn't try to challenge Tesla on EVs

    It is quite apparent the primary reason is its investors (including its dynasty) are stuck in fossil fuels and they can't get out and they apparently don't want to get out. And some of that is obstinacy, arrogance and ignorance and some of that is head in the sand. And it is grotesque to the point that the real mission of BMW has been to cancel or delay the transition to sustainable energy. BMW has apparently understood its role as part of the fossil fuel retail apparatus, its been kind of like premium gas verses regular unleaded and its rigid and doesn't want to change.

    But there is another compelling reason BMW doesn't actually challenge Tesla and just keeps losing every kind of share to Tesla year after year in segment after segment. And that is because they can't. They can't directly challenge Tesla in EVs because they lack the means. They can't do it on batteries or motors or software and now they are falling behind likely way behind on manufacturing. So they do their modular compromise platforms as part of making excuses. Does anyone think their modular platforms shared with their ICE vehicles improve their ICE vehicles? No, it compromises all of their designs. If BMW could have addressed Tesla in EVs they would have done it a long time ago. But they can't. And the proof of that is they've avoided direct competition year after year. They've been implicitly saying: we could do it if we wanted. But is a cover, because they can't and couldn't but would have if they could have.

    And this gets down to one of the key things about Tesla that comes out when you read between the lines of stuff people like Lutz say. Lutz says Tesla has no secret sauce. But he is saying that precisely because Tesla, despite its outward openness, is all secret sauce. And we've seen that time and again...2nd roadster rolls out of the semi.. Munro discovers Tesla invents literally down into the metallurgy and does literally everything of substance differently in its own considered way. And lets not forget Lutz is saying that because G.M. comparatively is all "where's the beef," "not invented hear," vitamin label creator, out sourced to irrelevance- GMs been retired on the job for a few decades and BMW isn't much different except it was smart enough to be on the right side of CAFE. Maybe BMW and GM should merge- after all it won't do for competitors in better spots to merge down.

    There is one more reason they wouldn't directly try to challenge Tesla with a ground up BEV and that is because if successful they would immediately cannibalize their ICE- but Tesla has been doing that form them anyway, so they just keep printing funny numbers reports and trying to come up with smoke screens. BMW is the last German hold out. Why?
