immediately before sitting in the car with the A.C. running, I had charged the battery to around 85%. I undid the charger, drive for about a mile, put the car in park, and sat with the A.C. running on its coldest setting. Outside it was about 80F. Maybe the car needed internal cooling, so the ice turned on in order to power the internal water cooling system. In motion, perhaps this is not necessary as the motors would have air rushing in to cool everything. Perhaps in park, the ice is needed to power the cooling system. It was not a very hot day, but I did go from empty to 85% full on the battery and then I ran the a.c. while in park. That's my current theory
I'm convinced that Honda doesn't want to sell a lot of these. It is a fantastic car at a dirt cheap price (with all of the rebates,) that gets a CA HOV sticker. I didn't even really need a new car. My 15 year old Accord still runs perfectly . But this deal was impossible for me to pass up , and I love the car. I can't understand why it's not a best seller. It has to be from the total lack of advertisement??
It really seems like the best deal on a new automobile that we will ever see in our lifetimes. I've been tempted to buy another one for my wife. If my 2005 Accord, which I just painted and installed new leather seats, wasnt running so perfectly even at 180k miles; I probably would At 180k miles, it hasn't had a single problem- not once. Outside of replacing light bulbs, batteries, and tires; it has been a dream to own.
Ahh, now I'm thinking more that it is temp related. Running the a/c at max (LO) temperature; especially on a temperate day, can lead to evaporator icing. I suspect the ICE fired up to send some warm coolant (doesn't that sound like an oxymoron?) to it to prevent that from happening. The cooling system for the HV battery has to be designed to run with the ICE off (think fast charging a hot battery on a summer afternoon) so it is separate from the ICE.
It would probably be the death of most of the activity and fun on this forum. Sometimes the quest for understanding is more fun than getting to the actual facts.
Today, I needed to make a long phone call so I sat in the car for lunch again today with the A.C. on. It was 91F outside with a 90% full battery. In 45 minutes, the ICE didn't kick on once. It did 4 times in an hour last week, while doing the exact same thing as I did today. That's it, I'm done trying to understand this damn car!!!! There is no rhyme or reason to its behavior. Im just going to drive it, not understand it. Just like with my ex..... On 2nd thought, I'll keep that joke to myself and not finish typing it
Is it possible that the previous occasion you were in HV (a.k.a. 'charge sustain') mode? In that case the car would do what it could to maintain the SOC of the battery within certain limits by running the engine. On the more recent occasion, if it was in ECON/EV (a.k.a. 'charge depletion') mode then it would allow the battery to lose SOC, and not run the engine. Just a guess.
Definitely not in HV. Don't get sucked into trying to understand the Clarity, as it might drive you mad
Wow, in ECON and Park with 90% SOC and the engine is running. Didn’t think that was possible but you’ve got the proof. Only thing that comes to mind is 1. What is the red warning in the DDI in the second pix? 2. The power meter is all white with no blue at all. The only time I’ve seen that on mine is when it did a System Check. I wonder if that’s what it was doing. Only way to know is if it doesn’t do it in the future. Otherwise I’m stumped as to why yours is seemingly acting differently from the rest of ours. Reverse engineering this wiz-bang computer on wheels masquerading as an EV is quite a challenge.
Not to be argumentative because Geor99 is adamant the car wasn't in HV mode, but the pictures aren't conclusive either way. I only have 6 weeks with my Clarity, so I may be confused, but you can be in HV and Econ at the same time. I think the only way in the pictures to know if the car was in HV or not would be to be able to see the far left of the display above the steering wheel. I think Ray B's hypothesis makes sense, but only if the car was in HV.
And if the car was unknowingly put in HV mode ... set lunch on the button for a moment for example ... HV would disengage when the car was turned off and go back to just Econ for the next drive, so it would be hard to tell after the fact.

I said that it didn't happen yesterday. It did happen today. And no, I don't sit in my car with the A.C. running for an hour everyday. Im trying to get the IRS on the phone and my office walls are thin. So, I sit on hold waiting for them to pick up in the privacy of my car.
I noticed you aren't using "Auto", what happens when you use "Auto" instead of manually changing it? Also 65 is very cold lol.... What happens if you do 70ish?
Late this week, we have had over 90 degree days and have not noticed the ICE turning on but will start to be more attentive....
