FYI, about the Ioniq 5 heat pump.
Do we know anything about heat pump availability in NA cars?

I am not sure if this is confirmed but I thought I saw someone say it was only available on the limited version. I hope that is not the case.

Stopped by the Hyundai dealer today to get some info on the Ioniq 5 and found none. They said they don’t expect any before a year. They also said that they haven’t sold a single EV at the dealer ever (including the Kona); this is a fairly good size dealer here in Florida. So, even if I get one through corporate reservation, and there is an even small electric glitch, I might have to ship car out of town……. Suboptimal situation.

    @Tony S,

I maybe wrong but I thought Hyundai and Kia EVs have only been sold in CARB states.

With EVs the maintenance is a lot less so needing to get work done is maybe once a year thing.

Yes, you’re right, but now Hyundai announced that they’re committed to offer the Ioniq 5 in 17 states (more than the ZEV states), but not every dealer in these states. So for maintenance and the occasional (rare) cases of minor electrical repairs, I’ll have to drive a minimum of 100 miles for these maintenance / repair items (unless Hyundai provides mobile services).

I wonder how cold the ambient temperature can be before the heat pump has to hand off to the battery-sapping resistance heater? I've been trying to figure out a way to determine that threshold in my electric MINI Cooper. I'm hoping some OBDII guru will find the signal that indicates when the resistance heater kicks in.

The Hyundai USA website has some text about a live Q&A event on the main page, but I didn't find a way to register...

Looks like they are doing live events every day for the next week or so. The event is accessible on the Hyundai website. I caught some of it this afternoon and the only interesting piece of information was something about the cars for the US market being manufactured early August and delivered two months later.

Caught a little bit more information during today's live events:
    • Estimated ranges: Limited trim AWD: 244mi, SE/SEL trim AWD: 269mi, RWD range: 300mi
    • No wireless Android Auto or Apple Car play
    • Heat pump available on the base SE model (too good to be true? or maybe that's with a package)
    • Turn radius of 39.3ft

  14. Re Range: Those numbers are pretty solid at face value (there are also indications that those figures may be fairly conservative)
No android auto / car play sucks (Did they indicate if that was permanent or that they might be open to enabling it in the future?)
Heat pump on the base model would imply it's presence on other trim levels as well

    Any other interesting bits?

Android Auto and Apple car play are definitely available, you will just have to plug your phone in. He mentioned something about a screen size limitation when going wireless that wasn't compatible with the car screens.
I agree the range figures are encouraging, and it looks like the RWD ultimate model is optimised for range (it gets the 19in wheels), but won't get the full 300 miles range of the SE/SEL because of the higher mass induced by the vision roof.

  16. Sorry, I mistyped, I meant *wireless* android auto /carplay. It is a strange choice to omit a feature that competitors seem to be embracing

Re range: I would expect that in the real world the ultimate RWD will still probably exceed 300. Obviously we won't know until it's in the wild, but Hyundai's history and some information floating around suggests the official ratings are conservative.

Was that information specific to the US market? (heat pump on base models, and range estimates?)

So delivery is expected (at this point) ~October in the US?
I really want to wait for this, but I'm not sure I should hold off on the 2019 Kona buyback program for that long.

Yes this information is applicable to the US market, I got it from the Hyundai live show room sessions.
My plan is also to delay the Kona buy back until I can get an Ioniq 5.

Anyone care to guess what the US pricing will look like? Am I fooling myself to hope that there will be a base model under $45k?

  20. The first edition EV6 is ~58k which is essentially an all up config (plus some special stuff probably). There will be no P45 in the US, so all else being equal the I5's top end config would probably be at least somewhat less. 45K base (which would be LR RWD) seems like a reasonable number.

I see no motivation (other than generating good-will) for Hyundai to make a low-priced version of a vehicle in high demand. Their motivation will change after the high-priced Ioniq 5s stop selling and are languishing on dealer lots. The chip shortage further amplifies their motivation to focus on making the most profitable versions. Follow the motivation.

  22. Precisely what I will anticipate will happen late 2022 when the 6 and 7 versions will probably be available to order (if not out already). By then more will be known about the 5, (the goods and the not so goods), so I will wait patiently. I am no longer going to pre-order, after what happened to Kona EV (excluding the battery folding anode issue), brake noises, coolant pumps cracking, motor and gearbox replacements, blank dash screen software issues, etc. Let the first released models get sorted out then I may consider pending the outcome. There are not enough 350 kW DC fast chargers in Canada anyways to take full advantage of the 800 V charging technology this year, hopefully that will be addressed as well.;)
