I went back to the configuration and found that the number of combinations is very limited. There are 3 drive train choices (rear wheel, dual motor, performance), seven colors, two wheel choices and two interior choices, so a maximum of 84 combinations (the autopilot etc are software updates and can be added or removed from any model.) However for rear wheel options there is only one interior choice and the for performance version, one wheel choice. The actual combinations therefore are only 56. The performance model may not be that popular, and I am sure some colors are not that popular. Using the 80-20 rule, about 10-12 combinations (20%) would account for about 70-80% of the volume. By limiting combinations and options, the planning becomes easier. If someone wants a Tesla 3 fast and their choice falls with these 10-12 combinations, they may be able to get it faster. However it has to be acknowledged that Tesla may prioritize production of the costlier versions but they still have to cater to demand. So if the opening poster had chosen something that was in the 10-12 popular choices, I would guess it would have been easy to find a similar model near by.
