You may be logically right, but the number that sticks out is 450,000 (or 455,000 it does not matter) and it is going to be difficult to live that down. Rivian needs to concentrate on getting the product out of the door rather than spending much effort on increasing order backlog right now. Elon could do it with two tweets (excuse the hyperbole) Rivian cannot and hence the let them not spend too much effort on that.

You have a point. I just hope people don't make a big deal out of the disparity. Tesla is afflicted with a large number of very loud voices trying hard to tear it down, and I very much hope those same groups don't focus on Rivian. Tesla has done very well at establishing a reputation for superior cars much in demand. If the same intensity of negative press and FUD posted to social media were to be directed against a small startup like Rivian, I'm afraid it would have a much bigger impact.

Yes, I put down my 1K. What do I have to lose (except 2% interest on it)? As to the probable number:
1)The company is being awfully quiet on this (and everything else).
2)I would assume that anyone enthusiastic enough to put down a deposit would be interested enough in the company/vehicle that he would eventually find his way here. There are 63 (including this one) posts in this thread by appreciaby less than 63 people. I have to assume that the number of reservations they have received is small.
3)Were that not the case they would crow about it to some extent some where.

This is very exciting for you. R1T has been hot topic at the shop. Many Jeep owners still prefer Jeeps since they love to do the mods and there are lots of jeep aftermarket parts available for their own taste. Still more than half of they are interested in R1T and curious about it's offroad capabilities.

Received a print today from Rivian, on heavy weight paper about 10x16 (no ruler around, sorry)

It's an artist rendering of the SUV, which is what I pre-ordered.

Received my R1T rendering yesterday and a letter.

I put a deposit down on opening day around noon eastern standard time. I also received a private viewing invite for April 12 ahead of the New York auto show.

  9. I believe InsideEVs will have someone at that pre-New York Auto show event. Hopefully we'll learn something new to share.

Did you get any more details from the Auto Show event? Thanks

  13. I haven't seen actual "new" from the event(s) (there were two, since there were so many people who wanted to attend).
Apparently, most of the crowd were reservation holders who wanted to get a look at what they had put their money down on.

We have the report from InsideEVs Tom Moloughney on our RivianChat news page. (I didn't copy the entire gallery over because I haven't figured how to do that yet, but I did put a few of the more interesting photos there.)

There have been a couple interesting developments, and I'll have the stories covering those on the news page shortly as well -- if they're not already there by the time you see this.

Also, welcome to RivianChat. :) We should make an announcement letting the world know we're here in a day or two.

I'm a 2016 MS P100D owner and I love my car. However, I've always been a truck guy which is why I've still got my 2005 F-150 with 232,000+ miles on it. I got excited in late December 2018 when I learned about Rivian's unveiling at the L.A. Auto Show - I'm a little out of the loop. Right on the heels of that information came Tesla's announcement that they would be pushing up the release of their truck then in early January the announcement about the BEV F-150. It seemed like the "game" was really getting under way.

I was really impressed by Rivian. Mr. Scaringe's credentials are impeccable and he appears to have surrounded himself with some rather impressive people from the automotive community. Additionally, they have really developed quite a network (Irvine, CA, San Jose, CA, Plymouth, MI, Normal, IL & the UK), 600 employees compared to another start-up with only 6. I can't help but notice the parallels to Tesla (e.g. a start-up company, all BEV, acquiring a factory that's already in existence [revitalizing a community that lost jobs AND not having to build from the ground up unlike another start-up that's still "panning" to build their factory de novo]). They came to the L.A. Auto Show with their product and all of this already in place.

Nevertheless, I love Tesla and what they have done for the EV industry/revolution. I love my MS. The R1T's short bed gave me a moment of pause - I've always had at least a 6.5' bed. Bollinger appears to have a nice product; however, they're not as far along or as well-established as the others. Also, it looks a little more like an electric jeep with an option for a bed. I do like the front-gate/nose-gate that they've included. Four "players" with their hats in the electric-truck ring. So, I sat on the sidelines to see who would come out with what.

I heard that Amazon and GM were both looking at investing in Rivian which confirmed my initial impressions about how well organized Rivian is. Amazon followed through with a $700 million investment but, I believe, GM backed out. I continued to watch. However, when I heard that Ford, one of the "players" that I was watching, invested $500 million, I realized that there's really only going to be two or, possilby, three BEV pick-up trucks. Just that one of them will have two different labels. Telsa, Rivian, Made for Ford by Rivian and, hopefully, Bollinger.

I put down my deposit for the R1T on April 30th. I'm still watching for Tesla's unveiling this summer because, in true Elon fashion, he has made some extraordinary claims about the capabilities that their truck will have. Even more importantly, after Autonomy Day, I'm stoked about their HW3 chip and I now have reservations about Rivian's use of Lidar.

I have been following Rivian closely since the LA Auto Show last year but never pulled the trigger on a reservation. Then when I visited the NYIAS and spending a ton of time with the Rivian folks berating them with questions and seeing how good looking it is in person and the ridiculous spec sheet, I put in my down payment right there at the Rivian booth. So ready for the end of '20!

  17. Was super excited to first hear about Rivian and live not to far away from the plant in Normal. For pickup truck fans and people who love cars in general the R1T is a game changer!

I was told by Tesla that I was the first "strict" internet sale in Illinois back in 2015 with my 90D once they made AWD Model S's and loved the that car beyond words after leaving behind my MKZ hybrid. Sad thing is though I drive roughly 24k miles a year and 270 miles (even 335 miles) just won't cut it. Once a week I drive 118 miles one way to work and the Polar Vortex I'm sure would've made that commute impossible in my Model S if I had kept it.

I heard the musings of an EV truck built in Illinois and 400+ mile range and just like my Model S sight unseen placed my preorder in Novemver just before the LA show. The more I researched the more I loved what I learned. And I openly admit I am a huge Tesla advocate still today, but everything that bugged and baffled me about Tesla Rivian has already avoided and I'm convinced beyond a doubt that we're looking at something bigger and better then the Model S with the R1T.

I'm all in for Rivian, and the R1T is seriously the perfect vehicle in my eyes.

Must say the R1T looks better then I could've imagined in person and RJ is a visionary guy who's extremely approachable and I'm excited for what's to come.

I paid my deposit 2 weeks ago, and have heard nothing since. I'm not too surprised- or worried at this point. Hopefully we will get some correspondence in the next few months.

  19. Looked over my preorder confirmation and didn't see anything either.

But price/battery pack size will determine your ultimate place in line before your number, so I guess once the configurator comes out and you finalize your order will you know your place in line.

I'm hoping a 180kwh order keeps me near the top with the order I placed with the LA show.

My car lease is up in November 2020

Tid's post was from back in Nov 2018. Since then I recall reading that someone found a discrepancy in the Terms and Conditions. It may have been related to a "confirmation number" and the lack of one. I pre-ordered back in April and I made a copy of the Terms and Conditions at that time. There is no mention of a "number" for canceling your order or anywhere else in the T&C document for that matter.

    6. Cancellation/ Refund.
You can cancel your Pre- Order and receive a full refund at any time by sending an email to
[email protected] from the address you used to make the preorder. You will receive your refund within
approximately 3 business days. Rivian promotional items, if any, received at the time of Pre-Order are yours
    to keep even after cancellation.

Everything I've read to date (Rivian, forums and articles) have indicated that those submitting a pre-order do not receive a "number" of any kind - just a confirmation email of your pre-order, which was exactly my experience as well.

It should along with the 135 kWh battery packs. However, my confirmation email stated:

"Production will begin in 2020. Fully equipped vehicles with the highest performance level and largest battery pack will enter production first. Our 180 kWh and 135 kWh packs will be available at launch with the 105 kWh to follow in 2021. "

So I suspect a 135 kWh BP configured order could be built before a 180 BP configured order even if submitted on the same day if the 135 BP order has an options package that surpasses the cost of the 180 kWh BP order. Considering the price of these EAVs I can easily see that happening with people ordering the 135 BP and using the cost difference from the 180 BP to add options even if it exceeds the base price of an 180 kWh BP.

  23. Yeah, ultimate vehicle price will determine your place in line. Pack size probably won't matter, but rather total cost of the EV. Good point.

Wonder if Rivian will make a "special edition" akin to the founder series with an even higher price tag?

I can see bidding wars already on the not too distant horizon.

I have a feeling this will be the most expensive car purchase of my life.
