The Hyundai Ioniq has been a sedan available in different configurations, including an all-electric model. Now, though, Hyundai has decided to use the name for a new sub-brand of electric vehicles. Ioniq will use the tag line, "I'm in charge," and will use the naming convention of IONIQ 5 / IONIQ 6 / IONIQ 7, with even numbers assigned to sedans and the odd numbers assigned to SUVs. The first model to in the lineup will be IONIQ 5. That's a midsize crossover (CUV) launching early 2021. It's based on the "45" concept EV (so why not call it IONIQ 45?, I shout into the void) which itself was based on the first concept vehicle Hyundai ever created. The Ioniq vehicles will be based on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) This image of the recent Hyundai concepts presages the first vehicles to be commercialized under the new banner.
