I'm looking at the same question myself. I live in NJ and feel like the winters aren't that harsh, but I also feel like I should have the battery heater just in case. I would not use much DCFC and will put a level 2 in at home, but the car would sit in the cold unplugged all day. Granted daytime temps are typically above freezing but we get a few cold days. Any suggestions for my situation from current owners?

If you only use level2, then you really don't need the battery heater. I agree that it would be nice to have, however.

The only time I would need DC would be if I have to make an unexpected trip for work during the day. So without the warmer the DC would just be really slow? Would it hurt battery lifespan at all?

Yeah, it would be slower - probably start out around 24kW, which itself is still better than on an AC charger.

My experience is that if I do a longer drive (2 hours), that driving itself can warm the battery somewhat, and this itself can help charge rates.
