Things i dislike about the Kona

    I ran into something yesterday. My wife was driving, and I was a passenger. I was trying to add her phone to the car and it wouldn't let me. You have to be parked for that to work.

    Same with setting a destination in the navi.

    Yeah, I know. They want to prevent people from doing this while driving.

  3. I think you guessed right. If a passenger can do it, then the driver could have groceries sitting in the passenger seat and accomplish those tasks.
    When going on a golf outing some years back, the drivers cell rang which in turn caused him to "smoke" his coffee, and "drink" his cigar:confused:
    Luckily no one was hurt as a passenger grabbed the wheel and it was a rural road.

    The LKA is downright dangerous at times. Where we live we frequent poor quality, steep and winding roads. The other day my wife was ascending the mountain and swung out wide to give some cyclists the 1 metre clearance you are required by law to give them, but before she realised what was happening the LKA was forcing her back toward them and in the end, disaster was only narrowly avoided. A number of helmet cams caught the action and I'm kind of hoping one of the cyclists makes an issue of it so I can get some video to send to hyundai pointing out the danger. I know you can turn the LKA off, but it seems to turn on again every time you restart the car. Is it possible to turn it off permanently?
     
  5. Yes, you can turn off the LKA. Read your owner's manual for complete information about the systems in your car. Also, if you maintain proper control of the vehicle it will not steer itself into cyclists.

    The idea is to signal if you intend to move out of your lane (also required by law). This temporarily cancels LKA. And yes, RTFM!

  8. I think you just need to get used to and then appreciate LKA, like many of the other driver assist features. We first experienced LKA a couple years ago (ICE car), and at first it was a bit disconcerting. But I think it makes you a better driver, in that it trains you to drive more precisely in your lane and not be lazy with signaling. My wife actually had more of a problem with it at first than me, and really didn't like it. But she, too, soon got used to it, and never complains about it now.

    As for it causing an accident by steering you into something, I can't see that. It takes almost nothing to overpower it, and unless you panic and overreact because you are not used to the nudge feeling, it should not be a problem. Once you've done it a few times, should be automatic without any unusual reaction by yourself.

  9. Same here but I need to move closer to the road edge to give oncoming trucks more room. I'm not going to use the turn signal because they will just take even more space or following cars will think I'm pulling over. I turn LKA/LFA off every start as a matter of habit.

    The car is a complex piece of machinery capable of maiming and killing. Why would anyone use an advanced feature without reading the manual?

  13. I read the manual of every car I own cover to cover at least once including the Kona manual.

    I think some of us are showing our age, and upbringing, these days there appear to be a whole lot of drivers who show no clue they understand the requirements of machinery. I suspect many/most of them are the same folks who regard an EV as an iPad on wheels, and complain about paying for servicing at warranty intervals as a dealer rip-off. Go figure. .

    Well actually I did read the manual, but you did not read my question - which was how to turn LKA off PERMANENTLY - because it seems to come back on every time the car is started. I haven't seen anything in the manual about that. As for maintaining proper control of the vehicle, I guess my wife did since she didn't hit anyone - but you hardly expect to be fighting the systems in your car to maintain proper control.

    • There is NO way to disable LKA other than at each ignition-on...

    On my car, in addition to the disable button mentioned, one can choose EITHER the warning beeps OR steering correction for LKA in the instument cluster Settings > Driver Assistance. I've chosen the warning beeps, as the steering correction just feels oddly intrusive. Not sure if that might be available on the Kona . . .
     
  19. Really? Hmm. I'm not sure that is true. I could swear mine has been off since I turned it off months ago. Or maybe it's just broken ;)

    There's a button to turn it on or off. The setting is sticky, it doesn't revert to "on" at startup — unless there are different implementations in different markets, or a problem with individual vehicles.

    One of my beefs was a lack of dual climate zones. I saw pictures of a 2020, that shows that it had this feature on at least some trim levels.
     
  23. The LKA on my 2019 Kona Limited does not restart every time the car is turned on. If I turn it off using the dash button to the left of the steering wheel it remains off when the car is restarted. I just went outside and confirmed this. The car started and LKA was off.
