  3. Nice to know it shows amps and kW delivered. Couple of questions before I order:
    (1) Does it show the reduced amperage as it approaches 100% (ramp down)?
    (2) Does it follow proper J1772 protocol (shut down when the Kona says it's full) without error?
    (3) How are the connectors after charging at say 30A for a longer period (5H+) temperature wise - cool to touch on both J1772 (part that connects to car charge port) and also the 14-50P (cord cap that connects to supply outlet)
    (4) What are the cable markings on the cord from the EVSE to the J1772 connector ( just curious of the gauge and temp rating of the conductors -
they may be printed or engraved on the outer jacket)
    (5) When you use the RFID does it accurately display the changes to selected Voltage/amps
A lot to ask I know, Thanks in advance

    1. The last time I checked it before I went to bed it was at 91% and was still pushing at 7.5 kW with 50 minutes estimated to be left. Does the drawn down @ 80% apply to the L2 chargers or just L3?
    2. Yes, the charger shut down properly when the Kona says its done the few times I've used it so far. No errors.
    3. The cable feeding the car & the J1772 connector felt room temperature. The charger itself is cool except for the screen (I think that warmth is from the screen being powered, not the charging). The body of the 14-50 plug is cool. The cable from the wall to the charger gets warm but I would expect it when it's pulling 30A-31A for hours. While charging, the internal temperature of the charger reported its temp around 40C-41C.
    4. The cable markings says: TUV 2 PfG 1908 EVO7EE-H 3G8.0mm^2+2x0.5mm^2 450/750V
    5. I haven't tried the RFID yet because it didn't come with any. They have to be ordered separately from what I read online. I'm planning on calling them next week to see what is available. I'll let you know! It did come with a J-1772 holster which was nice.

The photos attached show (1) the charge rate @ 91% was still 7.5kW (2) The completed range was 309 mi (w/o climate) (3) The charger when it was done, before I disconnected the cable. The bottom line shows nothing being pushed, while the symbol in the upper-right shows the charger is connected to the car but not charging (it shows a battery symbol when it charges).

  5. Thanks for that info- I am surprised it came with no RFID , how do you change charge rate settings? It shows right on the webpage. I would be calling that 610-905-2510#(David?) and find out why at least 1 wasn't shipped with the unit. The older units you had to shake to change. I would want that unit to be shipped just as it is advertised and willing to pay for a second RFID as a spare.
The wire gauge on the cord looks OK- Slightly smaller than a #8 AWG (50A) probably good for about 40A as advertised, with the control wires @ 20 AWG (a little small but OK)
I will purchase this unit depending on the outcome of your contact with the manufacture, if it is an up sell on the RFID, not so sure, please ask price for a spare, as far as I am concerned , they owe you at least 1 RFID no charge.
That comment in the webpage inquiring about a dryer feed required a plug change so that I can understand.(If that's the comment you are referring to)
And yes, the charge rate should slow down as 100% is approached, probably starting about 95% ramping down gradually.

Has anyone upgraded a 100 amp panel to accommodate a L2 charger in a town house (strata)? It’s a pretty general question but I just wanted to know if it is possible and if anyone has any success stories?

  8. Any answer on the RFID card yet/ or have tried to shake to change the charge rate settings? Still interested but need to know that info

I called them on Monday and they confirmed that it should have come with an RFID card. They dropped one in the mail for free and sent me a copy of the instructions in email. I haven’t gotten it yet but I won’t be home until late Sat night. Once I do, I’ll post back here!

They seemed very customer-service oriented, which I like.

He made a comment that their chargers are made by the same factory in China that makes Tesla’s home charger - which I have no way of verifying.

  10. Thanks...was it that 610-905=2510 # you phoned? That seems like the kind of service I like. If it was , I will be calling shortly after your (hopefully positive) report back to confirm price on 2nd RFID card. Also to confirm that it will handle 24 amps @120 V continuous (2880W - 80% of 30A breaker) RV type branch circuits) and of course purchase the unit.

Ordered the Kona last week. I have lead time to chose home charger, but so far it will be Flo x5. This model allow sharing with a second charger on the same line/braker, and they told me at a local ev event locally recently that they are working on the sharing system to not only split available power equally for the 2 devices but allow more power on each of them, not sure how it will alternate and final algorythm will be, though.

Now i havent got to use it yet, but i went with the morec charger, it was a toss up for that an the primecom, the morec just had a 50 dollar discount and the primecom one price jumped up. I also bought the morec's 20 foot extension as my normal charge spot is 30 feet away from the plug. but again havent used it yet as my kona wont be here fore another 2-3 weeks, just had to pre plan everything

The new RFID card was waiting for me when I got back from my road trip last night. It works as advertised and cycles the EVSE through 16, 20, 24, 32 & 40 amps. I attached it to the charger hose to be sure that I don't lose it. :) I did see that they raised the price on this model last week by $50. Overall, I'm very happy with it.

  15. Weird method of changing the setting. Any idea why they did a complicated RFID card that you could lose instead of a button?

Only thing I can think of is somebody pushing it when you're not there but it's a cable only, right? So it's unlikely your using it outside accessible for everybody, and in that case they could just unplug it?

  16. The original models had to be shook to change the amperage settings, RFID is a step up

  17. Maybe some time they will figure out that thing called button?

It’s an odd choice which screams gimmick to me. Perhaps they wanted to prevent accidental bumping of the amp setting? Despite that, it’s a solid product which I’m happy to have in my garage.

  19. Good to hear it's working great, and that's the most important thing! Like you said, weird choice.

  20. Positive review from electronic engineer in U.K. comparing Zencar adjustable and another make Khons.
At 5:40 details of Kona OBC, Zencar control details (shows PB and RFID operation at 14:45, inside the unit operation and layout starts at 22:32- shows latching relays, ground fault detection, disconnected ground reference and infrared test.
If your not into electronic details the summary is at 39:40.

Definitely Zencar unit is one of excellent quality and will be my choice. ( waiting for price to go down a bit)

  21. RP mostly with your positive experience in mind I finished up installing a new circuit and went ahead and got the Morec unit. Amazon.ca currently has a $50 off coupon.
It does seem well made, but I have a question. What is the input voltage rating on the back of your unit? On mine it indicates its 230V 50Hz which makes me wonder if it has both 50 + 60 Hz dual frequency compatibility. It powers up fine with no errors but it's screen indicates 239 volts when my multimeter tells me its really 244 volts nominal input. Unfortunately I can't do an actual plug in without my imaginary yet to be built Kona. :)

  22. Yup, works fine with 50 or 60hz. That was explained somewhere when I was buying it, in the Q&A, I think.

  23. Awesome, thank you.
