Kona EV Canada Sales?

  1. Has anyone else noticed that Konas seem to just be sitting on lots? I checked out a few dealers (in Ontario) and their inventory seems to be gathering dust. Also, does anyone have any idea about how many units were shipped and sold in Canada? I've never heard any numbers.

This is crazy because there’s a global shortage! I watch a YouTube video yesterday showing several countries with customers placing orders and being told they will be fulfilled in a year.

Also, people in the US are driving from state to state to buy one. Especially in non-ZEV states. In California, there have been dealers charging $10k over MSRP and they can’t seem to keep them on the lots.

  4. I know all of these things. That's why I'm a bit puzzled to see inventory sitting. I'm particularly miffed because of my long pre-order wait and the botched delivery. Could it be the lack of incentives in Ontario? Or maybe the bolluxed federal budget EV "plan"? Are BC and Quebec also seeing slow sales? I'm surprised that no press or insiders have spilled the beans on sales figures.

  5. Or possibly dealers have no incentive to sell EV'S because of the lack of continual maintenance earnings.

Looks like potential buyers may be holding off to see if the $5000 federal EV incentive will be adjusted to include vehicles above $45K. I picked up my Kona electric on Monday as my Leaf lease was coming up and I needed to get into a new car sooner rather than later. Since the federal budget year begins April 1 I'm cautiously optimistic that I can still receive the rebate should it be adjusted to include the Kona's price.

But still just the Premium models are available (in Ontario), not the lower price Preferred models.

I think low Kona EV sales relates to Canadian mentality that we will always have lots of gas and fuel emissions don't matter. I remember when the Ford C-Max Hybrids came out (and we bought one), and then their PHEV came out and (and we bought one). They had a terrible time selling them to Canadians and they have discontinued both models. Yet they are great cars, well built and we get 2.9 liters per 100 kilometers. (81 miles per gallon). Very few people bought them. Same with Prius in our neck of the woods. Yet we can cross the border into Washington State as we live 2 kilometers from the border, and Prius is all over the place. I think Canada is not jumping on the need to change our carbon footprint. I hope that changes. I am doubtful with the number one vehicle in our neighbour is big honking SUV's or pickups and each family has at least two in the driveway. Seems crazy with the jack rabbit starts and over the speed limit driving that is the norm. I always say the only thing to see electric vehicles being sold is gas being unavailable.

Read somewhere that the Federal rebate will not apply in provinces that have their own rebate?

And just checked autotrader.ca for Vancouver BC area, and it shows a couple of pages of the higher end Kona electric for sale. About the same as Toronto.
Most are over Can$53K. At that price they're competing against the Tesla3 Std+ with Autopilot.

Price and (winter) range is what's holding back many Canadians, despite an EV's other benefits.
The lack of any rebate in Ontario is not good. And in AB, SK or NL, those who can afford em might well be employed in Oil&Gas.

I don't think that is correct, it will apply country wide regardless of each provinces rebates, based on all the articles I have read. If you do find it somewhere else, please do share.

The autopilot you are referring to is not Full Self driving ($6,600 more), but similar to LKA and Smart cruise that the Hyundai Kona has in the Ultimate model. "The currently enabled features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous."

Can't find that article now. Guess we'll just have to wait and see. The details seem to be in flux. The Guv has declared that the PHEV Dodge Van made in Windsor will be covered and that's a >Can$50K vehicle.

And yes I included the Tesla 3 Autopilot feature but not the Autonomous mode as that makes the Model 3 more comparable to current crop of Korean vehicles and the Bolt (sort of, as I guess the Bolt lacks adaptive cruise ...)

It's weird that there are dealers with Kona in stock that's just sitting on the lot. On the other side of the pond (Europe) we're waiting anywhere between 3 to 18 months to get a hold on one of those. I'm in Eastern Europe and I'll be getting mine anywhere between August and October. Dealer sold the first batch of 40 cars in a few days. Their second order of 30 cars is already sold out before those cars even had their batteries produced (they're expecting the order to be produced late July, up to late October).

A listing on Autotrader doesn't necessarily mean there's anything "on the lot". Many of these ads have a "check availability” button for getting your contact info.

  16. The ones around me have photos on their lots so I think they're actually sitting there.

  17. When I was at the dealer yesterday(maybe the day before) I saw 2 grey Kona EVs on the lot. Didn't ask if they were spoken for

Just saw mention of 10 Kona EV's available at one dealership in Chilliwack. So that means Vancouver area must have lots of them available. What's up?

I just reached out to the dealership where I purchased my car, Guelph Hyundai. He said exactly this: “we’ve got plenty in stock. All colours to choose from” no notion of exact numbers, but still more than there should be sitting on any one lot when our friends in the US and Europe are patiently waiting months or years for their orders.

I personally think it has a lot to do with Tesla’s drastic price drop on the Model 3. Heck, even I started to regret the purchase once the mid range Model 3 was released. And to make things worse - they announced this morning that Autopilot will now be a standard offering, previously a $6000 option. When I ran my calculations a month or so ago, between a mid-range Model 3, black paint (free), aero wheels (free) and the premium interior, with autopilot - it was only a price difference of about $6,000 more for the Tesla. Granted, they’ve removed the mid range battery option. But the long range option now comes in at just $11,000 or so more than the Ultimate Kona. And don’t get me wrong when I say this - I absolutely love my Kona. But when you compare it to a Model 3 - it’s not even Apples to Oranges. It’s like Apples to hairbrushes - they’re not even in the same realm of imagination lol. The difference in price almost feels negligible once you’ve driven a model 3.

My greatest fear is that Tesla will continue to do “crazy” things and drop prices every which way. And at the speed they seem to change, in a few months the M3 with 525 km range and 0-60 time of 4.7 seconds will be a $60,000 car and Hyundai won’t be able to keep up. They’ll be forced to slash prices to move vehicles meaning if any of us go to sell in a year or two, we’ll be competing against brand new Kona’s selling for a fraction of what we paid.

  20. If you like sedan than Tesla M3 is the way to go. Unfortunately I needed the liftback

  21. Exactly. I have no regrets because a sedan is totally off my radar.

Is it now possible to LEASE a Kona Electric in Canada?
