I never bought extended warranty post purchase for a car. I plan on keeping this for 3 years and will go for a bigger battery/battery range.

Can I still buy it now if it is cheap enough?

Kkiran, the standard warranty is 3 years/36,000 miles. You would not gain much if you plan to upgrade after 3 years with the extended warranty.

True but just wondering if I do a private sale instead of trade-in, then the buyer should have some warranty.

It is correct that it can be transferred to the new owner in a private sale for a small fee, 50 dollars, I think. I am a retired master mechanic from a career in the Air Force, and I did buy it myself but I plan on keeping it over a 8 year period. Honda has one of the very best reputations for few repairs, but let’s face it, this is a first year car with a lot of new technology

Yeah and not sure what the battery warranty really means. What if the battery holds only 38 miles charge in 3 years? Is it covered or no?

I agree Hondas traditionally hold values better than others but not sure about plug-ins.

In general terms, the top and bottom 20 percent of the batteries are not used and it has reserve to combat degradation over the years of use. I have owned two Prius and a Ford Fusion hybrid previously, no issues over the years, and their hybrid batteries are basically the same, just smaller. I trust Honda on the batteries, even though the battery warranty is Vaguely written.
Only the leaf had had serious battery issues and most all agree that is largely because they are air cooled. This battery most closely resembles the volt and they have been largely trouble free.

The HV battery is warranted for 8 years but Honda does not state what % loss of capacity triggers a replacement.

That is the only worry I have with the Clarity. I think Tesla describes that %loss but not Honda. Honda should be upfront about this rather than call a 20% loss acceptable in say, 5~6 years!

This car is made in Japan and shared many parts with the clarity fuel cell. I hope it has good quality and reliability.

I don't think the battery is an issue. With the drop rate of the battery price, after few years, it will be very cheap.
Look at solar panel. That's why 80% of EV car are leased.

  14. Just bought a base white Clarity last week.
I financed with them at 0.90% for 5 years.
Declined the extended warranty offer because the finance manager trying to trick me into paying insane price.

He first tried making an offer like $250 a month for extend warranty... certainly I was shocked and probably you do. I asked him "every month for 5 years?". I told him you'd better just give me the total cost of your offer.
He certainly didn't say the total but continue doing monthly payment, he really thought we didn't know how to calculate.
When he lowered to $160 a month by removing some coverage, and I told him I didn't want it, final decision.
Was he serious? or just an idiot in mixing up yearly and monthly?

Bought my touring with the same 0.9% and finance mgr first offered a 3rd party warranty for an insane price because I assume there was a higher profit markup than Honda Care. I asked about Honda Care and he offered the Honda Care D80 for $2,550. I had done my homework and got on an online quote for $1,304. I made him match it to get the sale. He did so and said wow, that’s only $50 over our cost.
$1,304 over 8 yrs Is just $13.58 per month.
Love this forum. It saved me $1,249!!
I hate the dealerships. The most unscrupulous, do anything for a profit, type of business that I have ever had to personally deal with.
At least this finance mgr didn’t put on the hard sale but he wouldn’t mention the warranty product that best for me; I had to have already known about it.

Our Midland dealer refuses to sell HondaCare - will only sell third party...

How I feel about most car dealerships can be summed up in this quote from Star Wars:
“You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy."
While perfectly legal, I find it rather unscrupulous.

  18. Interesting, wouldn't they worry about that if you give a low rating at after sale survey? The salesperson is excellent but I'm tempted to give a low rating to the finance manager.

I didn't research on HondaCare before going to dealership, I usually don't buy extended warranty for anything. I'm considering it now because all the electronics that don't have proven record yet. Will I be able to buy from another dealer at a reasonable cost?

Yes. Hyannis Honda had the best price when I got mine in Feb. $1,304 for the Honda D80. You can get an online quote with confirmation #. I used this to have my local dealer match the price or you can buy in line.

    Use this simple strategy.

Never buy extended warranty on anything and you'll always come out ahead .

15 years on a Camry .. 300 in repairs. 6+ years on a Lexus 0 in repairs. Honda is very reputable and if there is a component that has a high failure rate they will usually extend the warranty of that part.

Everybody has their own opinions, and that's fine, but from the other side:
    1. Entirely new designs (especially "never before done") merit additional buyer protection; and
    2. If you tend to hand down older vehicles to family members, or make third party sales, an assignable extended warranty is gold.

Honda has consistently produced long-term reliable vehicles so their defects per million opportunities is better than most car makers except Toyota. The articles below remind me that the Clarity has an elevated number of opportunities for failure plus Honda has introduced new materials and methods to make the car lighter - innovative but increases uncertainty for long-term reliability. Together, this makes me lean towards buying the extended warranty which I've traditionally avoided for Toyotas & Hondas. Thoughts?

  23. I always don't buy extended warranty for anything except when I bought my Mazda 3. The finance manager said he knew I was not going to buy extended warranty if not the bottom price, so he gave me their cost, it's like $600 something for 7 years/100K miles. I did use it twice because of road hazards (before it was hit and totaled at 50K miles), one required replacing a wheel and a tire. If using dealer's labor and price, that $600 was well spent.
Road hazards has nothing to do with reliability of the car or make and not every extended warranty covers road hazards.

However, I do have another reason to consider the extended warranty.
I usually go for my mechanic for jobs or repairs that's not covered by warranty and it's of course much cheaper than dealer.
However, I'm not sure how many shops are capable of servicing EV or PHEV cars that could be very different from other cars.
So, when going to dealer shop is the only option, it's not going to be a few hundreds to get out.
