Let’s get the HV range problem fixed!!!! Here’s how and a poll to track it

Have you opened an official ticket with Honda concerning the wildly inaccurate/inflated HV range

  1. Yes

  2. No, but will soon

  3. No, and don’t think it’s worth the effort

Yeah, I have zero faith the reset will be a real cure. The only cure will be a new Honda algorithm for the HV calculation.

Even if that is the case, shouldn't the algorithm know there is only a 7 gallon tank in the vehicle, so it could never "double?" This has got to be something to do with the calculation accounting for MPGe in some fashion, not true HV range.

Agreed. I think it's working exactly as Honda designed - it's just an ill conceived design. I would guess that if you never charged it and drove HV only it would not give these outrageous readings.
In our case the Clarity has been driven almost 100% EV during the week but has been taken on regular 700 mile round trips every other weekend. Our HV range while incorrect at times has never gone much over 500 which I think is due to our EV to HV ratio being much lower than some other drivers.

I owned a Ford Fusion PHEV and somehow Ford figured out how to accurately state both the electric and gas range. Maybe Honda should speak with Ford.

Every other phev manufacturer has been able to figure it out, which makes it all the weirder that Honda gets it wrong now.

yup, and I traded in a 2013 Volt for the Clarity PHEV, and the Volt didn't have issue, however, the 2013 Volt design was either all electric, or all gas. It didn't actually go into a hybrid mode like Ford or the Toyota Prius. Still, no excuse for the bogus calculation

After the dealer did the reset, I subsequently filled it up, and it seems to be reasonable values for now, and I didn't top the tank off, though I don't think that was the trigger event, and agree with the consensus that this is a software problem, I will go through a few iterations of not topping the tank off, and if the HV values continue to show reasonable numbers, then I will start topping the tank off if I fill it up with gas to see if it still holds

I'm pretty sure it won't and it will be inversely proportional to your EV:HV ratio (I think) - do a lot of EV only miles and then an iteration of HV miles and it appears to the algorithm that your mpg is huge so it reports it as such.

After the first fill up, I had 880 HV range. I have submitted.

Bringing this up once again because I don't think it can be brought up too often. The other day we had the low fuel warning light go on and by the time we filled up we had about .5-.6 gallons left. Yet we still showed a range of 148 miles! Just unreal.

I really think that Honda will only address this once they've had people run out of gas in really bad or desolate areas, unaware of how wrong the range was, and thinking there was no immediacy in having to fill up.

Can Honda do over the air updates to the computer?

Only time will tell. But since map updates have to be down physically, I’m not holding my breath.
Since it’s critical to car operation/safety , I’d wager it will be a take to dealer thing unlike Tesla which planned for OTA updates from the start. And since it will be rather costly for Honda to R&D and implement, I don’t see it happening very often or for any minor issues.

I have talked to Honda about this but cannot see a way to email Customer Service. Only by FAX (really?), mail or twitter.

    Response from Honda Customer Service:
Thank you for responding with confirmation of your recent dealer inspection. We issue campaigns in the form of warranty extensions, product updates, and recalls for vehicles that seem to have a trending issue or a safety-related concern. These campaigns will be addressed on a vehicle by vehicle basis based on when and where a vehicle was manufactured, tracked by the VIN. With your VIN, we were unable to confirm your vehicle is affected by a campaign pertaining to the vehicle's fuel range.

We filled up our Clarity for the first time yesterday and noticed the inflated HV range. I submitted a ticket with Honda and linked to the threads here to show them that a high percentage of the users here are noticing the problem.

I mentioned this issue to the product specialist at the Clarity drive event last weekend. The product specialist never heard of the issue. So I guess we are not making enough complaints and noise for Honda. I think we should all start calling Honda customer service and log a complaint.

I've had my Clarity for about 6 weeks now and filled up for the first time yesterday. I was baffled by the 871 mile range it suddenly displayed, and so finally I clicked into this thread. I've filled out the Honda and NHTSA forms. Thanks all--I'm learning a ton here!
