Lots of ifs and buts in this thread. I really like my Kona (previous leaf owner) Wait 2 years from now and the if's will say I should of waited the selection then will blow you away. I'm happy with what I got.

  3. I’ve found they’re very hard to see at dealers here in BC. Was told by local dealership that they are ‘holding them at the docks’ in Vancouver and sending them out on a per-order basis to those willing to put down a $1k deposit on them.

Sent from my iPhone using Inside EVs

  4. Not good, long term storage at higher SOC probably exposed to sunshine on Annacis island pavement.

I wish I had some imagery to show this storage, because it's just a weird choice. Also, if these vehicles are parked at the docks in BC, why am I waiting 8-12 weeks in Toronto after putting down $1000? I'm lucky, since I got a test drive before putting down money. But 8-12 weeks is enough to make the car in Korea and ship it here, so...

  6. If you're in Toronto why not just buy a car off the lot? Are you holding out for something particular?

Do dealers here have Preferred, or only the Ultimate trim? There's a variety of things in the Ultimate that I view as either overpriced or liabilities.

  9. Ah, I see. I wasn't aware that Canada had received any Preferred trims yet. I don't think it's those cars sitting at port.

Agree, and I've only seen the Ultimate trim in the Toronto area at around C$54K.
I suspect that's all we'll ever see unless the Guv clamps down to ensure <C$45K models are available (which permits the Guv rebate on the higher trims).
    Same with the Kia Niro.
Only the Bolt seems to be currently available in the cheaper LT trim.
And now that the Tesla SR+ is eligible for the Fed's C$5K rebate, the high trim Kona and Niro have significant competition.
For the price, I would take the Tesla SR+

Hey, where do you see the Tesla SR+ with Federal $5k rebate? I only still see the provincial $5k rebate.

Is this something that is going to happen a later?

    Deciding between the two..

Yes, I see it now, thank you for your replies and links :)

I understand they are different cars, but which would you choose?

    Either SR+ or Kona Ultimate?

I would choose the Tesla 3 SR+ as I really don't think the Kona Ultimate is worth the extra $ over the Kona Preferred.
I do like sporty Sedans and the Tesla 3 seems really big inside. Besides, the Boss thinks the Tesla is "sexy."

But cost is important to us so if the Kona Preferred were available ... we might save a few K$ and go with that.

Were not buying for a while. Have to get the Condo Association on board with a charging station first.
Hopefully the Fed rebate is still in place when we do!

If you do the occasional long-distance drive, the answer is a no-brainer. Every other Tesla is a temptress, but the SR+ is too SR. Drove my Kona Vancouver-Portland-Vancouver last week with no problems. Interstate 5 is still droughty of DCFC in southern half of Washington. Juice up in Tacoma and Portland. EV Go is one of the good RFID cards to carry along south of the international border.

EPA combined ranges are 415km (Kona) versus 386km (Tesla 3 SR+). Not a huge difference.
And as the Tesla 3 has a much better Hwy efficiency (128MPGe versus 108MPGe for the Kona), I expect the highway ranges to be almost equivalent.
And in our case the Tesla has better charging station availability for our long route, with few of the hassles and confusion reported for other charging stations.

Thanks, brulaz, I stand corrected. I didn't know the short-range Model 3 had such a range. With no significant difference in range, the Tesla would be my choice if I were buying today. Tesla Superchargers are indeed another benefit Model 3 owners enjoy.
I change my vote! (I'm stuck with my Kona, but she's comfortable, I love her, and I'm married and monogynous.) Rats!
On the other hand, if I leave my stumpy Kona Ultimate for a sleek Model 3, I think I'll miss my honey bunchy's perky HUD and the paddles. Oh! The paddles!

And even the Kona Preferred has a heated steering wheel, which the Tesla 3 does not.
    Tough choices all around ...
And yes, the HUD on the Kona Ultimate is way cool;)

All the Ultimates at my dealer (four by the end of April, when I paid my deposit) were marked "sold", but everyone was waiting until May 1st for the federal incentive to start. I expect there will be very few Konas available at any trim level, soon.

I'm on the fence between the Kona preferred and the Tesla M3 SR+.

I understand that for many, the model 3 is the best thing that happened to humanity in a long time, but... the car seems to be designed and built for Californians.

    Let me explain.

It looks like, understandably, Tesla decided to cut some corners with the M3. Unfortunately for us Canadians, the corners cut include:
-no battery heater (it uses a bizarre heat recovery mechanism from the engine, that sounds more like a hack than otherwise)
    -no heat pump

Winter range loss is important to me because I only plan to charge at home. I only use the car for 60km commutes and many short trips around town. No need or use for public charge stations, except maybe the once in a bluemoon 200km trip.

I watched dozens of M3 and Kona videos on youtube, trying to find out how much range is lost during winter with these two cars. I focused on videos showing highway driving at 100+ km/hr, heater on, normal driving at around -15C (which is the average of the coldest days where I live)
    Here are my unscientific estimates:
    -Model 3 range loss = 38%
    -Kona range loss = 22%

if you have better estimations, please share!

why are these numbers important? well, the problem is a combination of factors. Take the M3 SR+ for example, it has a theoretical range of 386 km.
Problem is, even Tesla recommends, for daily use, to use around 60% of the battery capacity. From 90% full to 30% full (YMMV as Tesla forums and even Tesla officials seem undecided when it comes to get this kind of info)
-So if we should target using 60% of the battery capacity, the 386km range get'S reduced to 231km.
-Now, if we are talking winter, as per the range loss above, the 231km range will get reduced to around 144km.

In other words, with a M3 SR+, in Canadian winter (-10 C to -20C), I should plan for a max range of 144km between charges...

now take the Kona, same calculations:
    -base range 415km.
-let's assume a similar capacity use of 90% to 30% as the M3 (Even if I was unable to find any guidance regarding Hyundai batteries online). that gives a range of 249km
-as per above, winter range could be reduced by 22%, so it provides a winter range of about 194km

In other words, with a Kona, in Canadian winter (-10 C to -20C), I should plan for a max range of 194km between charges...

    now add to this that:
-model 3 SR+ would cost me 10.000 CAD more after all is said and done, compared to the Kona preferred
-I, for one, don't care if the car can accelerate to 100km/hr in 5 seconds or 8
-I live in Quebec, pothole republic, and I'm concerned that the more sporty M3 suspension will make me hate the idea of taking the car to the road

I'm trying to convince the conscious part of my brain that the Tesla is the good choice, but i'm failing.

    Please help me!

Have you found a Kona Preferred anywhere?
I wasn't aware that there was such a difference in winter range loss and that the Tesla 3 SR+ lacks a battery heater and heat pump.
Apparently it also lacks a heated steering wheel.

We are asking similar questions. If the Kona Preferred were available, that would prolly be our first choice given the $$ difference.
But if it were between the Kona Ultimate and a Tesla 3 SR+, I dunno. The prices are similar.

My local dealer told me they have 2 months of wait if I make a reservation
