There is an error in the GCR article. It speaks of a $4000 Ontario tax credit. It wasn't a tax credit. It was an outright $13,000 subsidy financed by the now cancelled cap and trade greenhouse gas program. That's why I went for a new Leaf after only 2 years. Squeaked in just before the deadline to get a much improved car (contrary to what the trolls and Leaf haters claim). Quebec and British Columbia are continuing their provincial incentives which means that in those provinces the combined subsidies will be over $10,000. That oughta get things moving!

  3. A $5,000 tax credit is helpful, but having a $45,000 vehicle purchase price cap effectively makes it good for 2 of 3 lower trims of the Nissan LEAF and the VW e-Golf. It's too low for the Hyundai Kona Electric and the Kia Niro EV. Want a Tesla? Forget about it. Not even the base Standard Range is cheap enough.

    Overall, it's pretty disappointing.

***Edit to add that the Chevy Bolt might squeak under the line -- it starts at $44,800 -- but not sure how transport, taxes etc figures into the picture.

Yes is some senses it is disappointing but you have to remember that these days in politics optics counts for more than reality. The federal gov't is facing an election within a year. The Ontario Liberal EV incentives were hammered hard by the Conservatives claiming that the Libs were squandering taxpayers money by "giving rich people money to buy Teslas". Unfortunately this played rather well for them and I'm sure the federal Libs are aware of this.

By capping the value at $45,000 the feds escape the charge of giving the well to do money to buy Teslas while appearing to be doing something to promote alternative transportation. So sometimes a half a loaf is better than none at all. The much despised Leaf should sell well in British Columbia and Quebec. The big thing in EV promotion is getting "butts into seats" so anything is helpful in this regard. As these vehicles age, those who like to trade every so many years will be contributing used more affordable EVs to the resale market. Speaking on personal experience, once you've owned an EV you're pretty well hooked.
