Sounds like most dealers are adding the mark up. If any one in CA is looking for a dealer that isn't doing this, I purchased mine from Westlake Hyundai. No pressure dealer and no mark up.
When the first cars hit edmunds, I called the local San Diego and LA dealers. The dealer in Escondido had a red Ultimate, so we drove over to buy it. The salesman said,"Oh, that was a mistake. The car was sold days ago for 2K over msrp." Thankfully, I found one in transit to El Centro. Bought the car the last week in Feb for msrp of 44,650, no mark-up (total plus delivery was about 46K). Only mod so far, is changing the tires to good continental contacts (?). It reduced the noise and torque steer. Good luck hunting.
Man, buying a car in the US sounds confusing as hell lol Here in the great white north - it's illegal to sell of over MSRP. So "getting hosed" is paying actual sticker price. Most, if not all cars can be had for less than sticker.
When I got mine it was full MSRP. I did however receive the $5k provincial rebate and $1k off extended warranty. Also a very good trade on my 16 Leaf.
Getting into this conversation late. I am in Massachusetts and am to the point where I am going to start negotiating a deal. When it comes to buying a EV, I feel like I'm in left field! I've bought/negotiated cars/motorcycles before, but I don't know what represents a good/great deal. What is the best source to find invoice the price for the Kona EV Limited? Is that the price I should shoot for?
I didn't even think of negotiating. The minute I drove the thing I knew there were going to be buyers lined up for it. That was 10 months ago. Off topic, but there was a report today that BC has the most EVs per capita on the continent, with Vancouver Island leading the charge.
Well, when we (Vancouver) have the highest gas prices in North America, and free charging all over the place (I have yet to pay for a charge), plus generous govt subsidies,... no surprise with that. I just wish we had some subsidies or tax incentives to install solar panels, and I would do that as well. The Conservatives (who won the popular vote but lost the election) had promised that, but doesn't look like it will happen with the current prov and fed govts.
I think with so few of them floating around and demand reasonably high, it's supply and demand and you're going to pay very close to sticker. I didn't really shop around much as the next nearest dealer isn't that close...
I live in Maryland and just bought an SEL. I was an informed buyer looking into both EVs and PHEVs. Narrowed it to Hyundai because of the warranty, esp lifetime battery for 2019 models. The salesperson told me several things that weren’t true (either uninformed or lying to get the same) so I never trusted him, but I learned enough online (and here!)to choose a Kona. I bought the SEL 2 weeks ago without financing for 35750 (includes freight, but not tax, tags, or processing). I’m really happy with the purchase so far. Sent from my iPhone using Inside EVs
I bought my 2020 Ultimate last Thursday for $3500 below MSRP from Michael Vu at South County Hyundai in Gilroy, CA, 30 miles south of San Jose. I responded to an email offering that discount on all Kona EVs in stock, and got the same email again today. For more about the experience, see my Yelp review.
We bought our 2019 SEL last month for $2000 below MSRP (plus $2k Maine state incentive and $7.5k federal tax credit). Not sure what's going on in CA, but up here they're selling well, but about like a normal car, in terms of negotiating a price.
I paid Sticker for mine here in Colorado $36,450(Minus 5k Colorado State EV rebate) Plus Destination of $1050. No up charge at all. They had to get it from Connecticut. If anyone lives in Colorado and needs one at cost I know the manager at the Dealer that can do that. Cant wait to file taxes next month and get my $7,500 federal
I bought my 2020 Ultimate (Grey/grey) in Cerritos, CA in late Dec. for $45,055 = total cash price. Nice clean transaction and knowledgeable salesmen. This followed many e-mails to SoCal dealers (maybe 10) asking for cash-price quotes on this car, with very mixed responses.
One caution: Those eager to get their HOV decal quickly should be cautious. Some dealers pre-order the decals. Others are quick to register your new EV so you can mail in your application. (Does anyone know if some dealers still hand you plates on the spot?) South County does none of these. They mail the paperwork to Sacramento once a week. More than three weeks after my purchase, I'm still waiting for permanent plates. (I'm still happy - I'd rather have the discount price and wait for the decal. YMMV.) To apply for the decal, you don't absolutely need plates, according to the Special Processing Unit agent I called. What you do need is to have your VIN in the system, which happens only when Sacramento processes the registration paperwork. The DMV FAQ says to wait for your registration to arrive in the mail, but I suspect that's because they don't want you calling the main DMV help line and asking if your VIN is in the computer. That's what I did yesterday, and found out my plate number too, so my REG 1000 is already in the mail. If you want to take a chance, you could even mail in your REG 1000 when you buy the car, using your temporary plate number, because DMV is usually well backlogged on the decal applications. But if I'd done that, my application would have bounced, because when I called last week, they were processing REG 1000s from the day after my purchase, and my VIN wasn't in the system yet.
Actually the California DMV subcontracts out new car registration to three processing subcontractors. Which is why the DMV doesn't want you to call them as they don't know until they receive the paperwork form the subcontractor. It usually takes the subcontractor a week to process the paperwork. The hangup comes from the dealers as they will wait and send all of the paper work for the sales that month at the end of the month. If you need a rush ask your dealer to send it out when the car is purchased.
No mark up above MSRP for a 2020 Ultimate lease through the dealer in Beacon, NY....and they sourced it from a dealer in MD (Towson?). Very few 2020s were around the NY area in December, hopefully the supply will improve with time.
State Trim Msrp Price paid OTD price. Looking for some insight as I am ready to purchase. Thank you! Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
