Map updates- Do they exist?

We got a small personalized brochure in the mail yesterday. Contained within it is a note that there is a map update available. However as we found out the other day, following their link, there is no map update for a 2018 Clarity. In fact only a 2017 Clarity is listed. The only map updates for a 2018 model is an Accord & an Odyssey.

Does anyone have any idea if such an update actually exists?

The navigation was so bad when i drove car home ... it was directing me to take a turn and go on a road which did not even pass my neighborhood instead of continuing on the path.

my iphone maps navigation is so much better.

Yeah, all of these in-car nav systems have various flaws in routing. I can't say we've noticed the Clarity's is any better or worse than is typical. Even the iPhone maps nav is suspect at times.

However either way I would like to keep abreast of map updates, and find it odd that Honda implies an update exists when it doesn't reside on their website.

I got the same brochure and saw the part about map updates but I always use Google Maps so I haven't really looked into it yet. I will definitely upgrade them if an update is available, because why not?

I haven't tried doing the update, but the instructions sound like it might work.
    1. insert a 16 GB USB drive in the USB port on the Clarity. Go into settings > map & vehicle > Upgrade Maps. Press Start Upgrade. Wait 1 minute & remove USB drive.
    2. Launch the Garmin Express program from your computer. Download Garmin Express. Plug USB drive in your computer and follow prompts. Garmin Express will verify if there is a new map upgrade available.
    3. Insert the USB drive in the USB port on the Clarity. Go into settings > map & vehicle > Upgrade Maps. Press Start Upgrade. Follow prompts to complete upgrade.

I also got the personalized brochure from Honda a few days ago. I wonder if the map update is a one time free download or if any future updates will be made available free of charge.

This is why Tesla will be very successful. Other manufacturers insist on making this so difficult. The car should either have its own data connection or at least pair to the phone or WiFi to download the updates. Having to have a computer to download the files to transfer to the car is a huge drawback, especially when stand alone computers are becoming less common.

Well, it’s either a coincidence or Honda does read these forums. I posted that despite receiving the brochure, there were no Clarity map updates. A short while ago, bam, the updates for the 2018 Clarity magically appeared. :)

My dealer said we get free map updates for 5 years.

Just did the update and all went fine. Of course with these map updates it's very hard to say what changed.

I also did the update and all worked fine. I used a 32 G patriot USB3 formatted to FAT32. Step 1 took about 3 min, step 2 took 16 min and step 3 took 14 min. I wonder if the 1 hour for step 2 and 3 in the instructions are if you are using a USB2.

Ken7, bpratt eta al: Thanks very much for trying this out. I had printed the instructions and found a large enough thumb drive yesterday but (due to a major Gmail PW bug today, that is eating my time) I had not yet tried the update. Your posts lend confidence that its only Gmail I'll be mad at, not Honda/Garmin. Cheers,
P.S. - I found some very minor nice features of the Clarity that I'll post soon on another thread.

I just did the map update and it worked perfectly. You only go to the Garmin website to download "Garmin Express" app. The app takes care of finding and downloading the proper files.

Now would be really nice if Honda would offer a user-installable method for other software updates.

I did the 2018 Nav update and discovered the following. I don’t have a 16Gb thumb drive so I tried to use a 128Gb. The Nav wouldn’t recognize it because, I believe, it uses a different file system (not Fat32). I was able to get it done with an 8Gb since the files fit.

Even with the 2018 update, I noticed two different large road projects completed over two years ago in my area are still not reflected in the maps. So the in car navigation maps are still lacking.
At least it has CarPlay to use our phones if necessary.

Similar experience here. After the update, I checked a few intersection changes made about a year and a half ago, and they were not shown in the new version.

Just out of curiosity, where are you getting the updates from? Care to link?

You do not download updates. You install the Garmin Express application on you computer and it does all the work. Here are instructions. You must format the USB drive to FAT32.

    1. insert a 16 GB USB drive in the USB port on the Clarity.

I followed the instructions. Used a 16GB drive from Honda from CRV map update purchase. It did start the install and after about 45 minutes, it said "failed' message. I will try with another drive. What version do you guys see with the latest update?

    Software Version : 2.08
    HONDA: 2.00
    Hydrogen Stations: 3.00
    ...
